Having encountered the two viewers of your first paragraph, I very much enjoyed your explanation, to the point and full of insight. There will always be these two types of viewers, but what counts as you say is the final result, what we envisioned and what we are able to convey. The same photo will bring up tears to the eyes of an emotional viewer who resonates with your vision while it will bring forth criticism from the rigid purist technical mind. As I see it, the latter misses out. Great reply, Robert!

A thoughtful, well-written explanation that reminds me of the questions Henry James said should be asked of any work of art: 1. What was the artist trying to do?, 2. Did the artist do it? and, 3. Was it worth doing?

It's that third question that should give an artist pause before doing all to an image that Photoshop makes possible. In fact, it's the third question that led Ansel Adams to say that making twelve good photographs a year is a reasonable goal for any photographer.

Great article, Robert! There's been a lot of discussion at the gallery on the subject lately...your article fits right in and will maybe give members "ammo" to answer customers who question, "Is this photography?"

Elsa & I saw your show at "The Artistic Image." Beautiful work...as usual!
